Before the development of these transponders, navigation was so imprecise that oceanographers were unable to return to the same site in following years.

In 1971, the student activists, however peaceful, were seen as a threat to the tenuous Turkish government. The government intended to provoke them into fighting back, and once a student lifted a hand, the thugs would shoot to kill. That year, the military hanged five Turkish students. All universities were closed, the best and the brightest imprisoned. Those who questioned authority dis- World Geography 27 appeared. These tragic circumstances killed any vestiges of political naivete I may have retained.
