This means that they do not have to rely only on the scientist’s own interpretation of the data; they may also draw their own, potentially different, conclusions. Of course, we frequently trust scientists to draw their own conclusions about their data (after all, they are the experts), and we rely on their interpretations. However, when conclusions are made on the basis of empirical data, a knowledgeable person can check up on these interpretations should she or he desire to do so. This book will demonstrate how.

As we will discuss more fully in Chapter 7, another type of descriptive research—known as naturalistic observation—is based on the observation of everyday events. For instance, a developmental psychologist who watches children on a playground and describes what they say to each other while they play is conducting descriptive research, as is a biological psychologist who observes animals in their natural habitats or a sociologist who studies the way in which people use public transportation in a large urban city.
