21 22 The main facility will be an accelerator to produce synchrotron radiation. It will be an extremely strong light source with a spectral range from the infrared region to X-rays. Apart from high intensities the light has special properties (very short pulses, polarized) offering research opportunities in many fields. Individual beams for specific interests of potential users can be set up and the main research domains will be: 0 0 Physics (mainly condensed matter) Material science Nanotechnology Molecular biology Archaeology Environmental studies Medical research.
The total funds involved are small compared to the funds available in the region for other infrastructure projects and therefore the main task is to convince decision makers that funds for the scientific infrastructure are an investment for the long-term welfare of society. The operating cost is covered by contributions of the SESAME Members. The total budget amounts presently to about $ 1 million which is mainly used to pay salaries. With the occupation of the new building this budget has slowly to increase and is supposed to reach about $ 5 million in 201 1 when the facility will be in operation.
