R. Louise McManus, director of the division of Nursing Education at TC, wrote the foreword. The book was reprinted in 1971 as the first in the six-volume Wiley paperback nursing series. It was recognized that a program in nursing in two-year colleges needed to be based on extensive research. The Joint Committee attempted to obtain a grant from one of the traditional sources of foundation support but was not successful. However, in 1952-the year after the Montag study was in print-Mrs. Nelson Rockefeller made a grant of $1 10,000 to the division of Nursing Education at TC based on a proposal prepared by Dr.

Montag suggested the addition of several courses: philosophy of the community college, psychology of the late adolescent and young adult, administration of programs for nursing technicians, financing nursing education and budget planning for nursing programs, teaching nursing to nursing technicians, and observation and practice teaching in programs for nursing technicians. Her reason for a course on the philosophy of the community college was explained in these words: “The increasing emphasis on the extension of the educational period for all youth makes it necessary to understand the institution offering education at this level.

Courses should include biology, microbiology,human growth and development, nutrition, and the nursing arts, including the needs of various age groups and types of illnesses.
