Von Koenen gave him a region in the Teutoburg Forest, between Detmold and Altenbecken, to map for his doctoral degree. Here Stille documented the existence of Mesozoic faults. After obtaining his degree in 1899 he was hired by the Geological Survey of Prussia, where he continued mapping around his dissertation area. In 1908 Stille moved to the Technical University of Hanover as professor of geology and mineralogy and founded the Geological Society of Lower Saxony. His first papers revealing his tectonic views were published in the journal of this society.
Random prospecting augmented the search for oil, but knowledge of surface geology began to dominate discovery. Stanford and Berkeley increasingly concentrated on training petroleum geologists. Ralph Arnold, a 1902 graduate of Stanford, was an unusually effective early petroleum geologist. The simultaneous evolution of the petroleum industry and the burgeoning geology departments at Stanford and Berkeley led to a virtual monopoly by those departments in training geologists. In the 1880s and 1890s USGS geologist J.
