Two Kingcobras were used by the British during the Second World War and immediately thereafter. Great Britain received two P-63s through Lend-Lease (FR408, ex42-68937, and FZ440, ex-4269423) which were diverted to the Royal Aircraft Establishment at Farnborough to conduct research on low-drag laminar flow wings. FR408 flew for the first time on 18 May, 1944. It was later involved in a landing accident and had to be replaced by FZ440 (which had received a one-piece bubble canopy). These experiments demonstrated that low-drag laminar flow wings lost their efficiency if their contour was destroyed by crews walking on them, by refuelling hoses and even insects.
