Alongside Europeans, hundreds of thousands of Chinese, Japanese, South Asians, Koreans, Filipinos, Southeast Asians, and Pacific Islanders arrived in the United States in the 19th and 20th centuries. The reasons behind the immigration for each Asian group across the generations differed based on the political and economic landscapes of the United States and of the Asian country from which they came.
